Entering from the horizon on an African plain, the vehicle's presence demands a formal and classy approach, something unique in an SUV. The observers in this piece were the lovable locals of the area - the Meerkats. The Meerkat is wonderfully unique in that it exhibits such a wide range of human-like mannerisms and movements. Mathematic and Nick Losq focused on naturally anthropomorphizing the characters for the audience without instilling any cartoony actions. Shows such as “Meerkat Manor” were used as the guide for the animators in order manifest individualized personality within our small team of Meerkats, while keeping their movements natural and ‘wild’. It was important to create a duality of personality in our Meerkats for this spot. Initially we observe them, like a documentary, in their natural habitat playing in an uncivilized way: play-fighting, picking fleas, lazing around in an unflattering manner. As soon as they pop out of their hole in Tuxedos, however, their performances shift to something very civilized and genteel: chins up, chest out, arms down - but not departing from any natural movement of the animal. This method of directing the animation was a fantastic way to further compliment and reinforce the message that Koleos and Renault are presenting. As we dive deeper into the spot the content and environment takes a more structural shape, keeping thing organized in the IBM paradigm. Each year one artist is commissioned to create the title sequence for the conference - and our own Bradley Munkowitz humbly accepted the invitation to create something spectacular for the 2011 event... THE INSPIRATION The initial inspiration was to take graphic pixelated light sequencing and integrate it into a live-action modern dance piece. This ultimately translated into building a unique LED light grid that would serve as the primary light source for the talent below. Immediately, A narrative evolved: a creative soul searches for inspiration as he faces manifestations of his inner ghosts. The three seductresses that descend upon him represent the various stages of his awakening. The first is doubt and indecision - represented by the REAPER. She challenges him and he is eventually is forced into submission as she envelopes him, enabling his insecurity. The second set of seductresses are twin GAZELLES who play a back and forth. They are the conflicting ideas that float in a the head of an artist as he tries to manifest his turmoil into inspired focus. The last seductress is the FIREBALL. She is the spark that lights the fire in the artist to create something beautiful. It is pure passion, a coming together of the artist and his muse.. Throughout this awakening process his clouded vision is purified by the lights above to usher in the physical and mental clarity of his inspired self. THE PROCESS THE LED GRID LED Grid Build: Faced with the daunting task of building a unique LED light grid, the Black Swan team, along with lighting design team Embrace the Void, took to the skies in lifts to rig 169 LED lights to a grid. Every four to six bulbs were linked to a distro and decoder box that transmitted data to the LEDS corresponding the the lights. Each Decoder needed to be properly linked, then run through a master box that was wired to an MBOX interface to run original LED sequences created by Munkowitz. The arduous process took two full days to wire properly and set up, but in the end was worth the effort. <img an emotional one for our hero.  In order to translate the movements of the dancers with the lights of the LED grid, original patterns were created by munko to parallel the movements. Over the course of weeks each individual light bulb was programmed, from color to luminosity, to create a visual tapestry that matched both the ebb and flow of the music.   Additionally, it added to the tension and release of the dancers and they explored the space and each other. Essentially LIGHT was the production design for our characters to explore, and their landscape was meticulously created to enhance our lead character's journey. <img The styling of the characters became the cornerstone that would link the characters in this fabricated world. Our hero begins with dark black contacts that envelope his eyesight. As he progresses, the light coming in, he begins to lose the darkness. This was represented by a bleeding of the black along his face. Special contacts were created and fit - one for his start, and a second pair that were more cloudy to represent the later stages. The female dancers were outfitted with clothing that best mimicked the color pallettes from the LED grid, but also allowed for a great freedom of movement to get the most dynamic performances. breathe an amazing life into the concept. Instantly seeing the dramatic prose behind an abstract idea, she put together a cast of passionate dancers that took to their roles perfectly. Utilizing the pre-vis GMUNK created, she was able to coach her dancers to hit the specific moments that would visually tell the story. Shooting for the proper stop to maintain a cinematic level of depth-of-field, they kept camera movements natural - a fair balance of handheld and smooth steadicam, helped by the use of an Easy-Rig system. In the preparation it was very important for both to utilize as many in-camera properties to get the most dynamic film. As such, a Fish-Eye lens was used to mimic the POV of the hero. Low-Frame rate was utilized to mimic the photographers slow-shutter, creating a frenetic streaking during chaotic moments. High-Frame rates were used to create striking slow-motion moments that added that extra exclamation on poignant story arcs. <img A curious passerby would then take the initiative and jump on, starting to pedal. Massive art murals would descend from rooftops and cover buildings as the wheels began to spin - painting scenes of natural life coupled with urban renewal. Rabbit Content and Black Swan immediately saw an element that needed adjustment. Biking is a celebration of movement, freedom, exploration and exercise. Immediately the process shifted to a biker in motion. Stationary murals transformed to moving pieces of art that would manifest as the bike passed locations. With a spark of brilliance an idea was born: live light projection as the art. To show the diversity of bike riding culture the single rider became three riders: a daily commuter, a casual rider and BMX riders. Peopleforbikes.org was pleasantly surprised at this iteration of their ideal and the proverbial wheels starting moving for Black Swan director Nick Losq and Rabbit Content co-director Trevor McMahan. Illustrative Development: Animation that bordered on whimsical, innocent and fun became a foundation that the final product was built on.  Brian Gossett, a supremely talented artist whose touch meshed well with Nick and Trevor's vision, was brought in to illustrate the elements.  Under the guidance of design director Bradley Munkowitz, the unique characters began to fit into the theme of renewal: flora and fauna that would provide a stark and bright contrast to the dark and empty concrete jungle. <img elements (gears, pedals, handlebars, etc…) the natural elements began to take a unique shape that personified the mission.  Black Swan then began the process of breathing life into these elements through animation.  Landscapes were created that would serve to show a lasting and immediate change in the urban environment, as well as the generation of a convergence point where all the varied elements would coalesce into a livable space.   Keeping with the theme of nature, a park seemed to be the obvious choice as it combined the elements of lighting and concrete of an urban environment with hills, grass, blooming sunlight and a calm stream. Two long nights of shoots followed.  With the collaboration of DPs Jackson+Karinja (another part of the Rabbit team), Nick and Trevor took over the streets of downtown.  Fluidly moving with the bikers, they captured the fun and free spirit of the ride from the backs of vans, skateboards and free-hand Segways. <img Given the iconic, ominous and powerful rabbit imagery, Black Swan created a 3D model, lit to bring gravitas to the sometimes-whimsical creature that represents the production company. Inspired by Rabbit’s ability to bring many creative units and outlets together under one strong banner, we decided to bring broken pieces together to FUSE into the image under the strobe of a hypnotic light transition. The effect is both strong and mesmerizing. To take it to the next level, we went into the animation and created both Anaglyph and Stereoscopic versions of the sequence. Using a custom written OpenFrameworks application, we were able to design and generate a dynamic neurological world with infinite scalability. Without distracting from the world we’d painstakingly created, giant type and animated screens of key auto-trader information take cues from a light-based neurological language. All the information is paced through a voice-over by Christian Slater. Bradley Munkowitz brought his talent to the set as he directed the live action scenes for the spot. In addition to the location shoots for the bookends to the commercial, we shot about 30 extras on green screen to simulate the large crowd in the 'Serious Shoppers' shot. We also worked with the extremely talented Gerald Abraham and Industry VFX to create a photoreal CG car, passing animation data from Black Swan to their remote setup. In addition, we implemented a real suspension system to simulate the natural push and pull of the SUV through the powerslide and other driving feats. The challenge of creating a spot chock full of information is making it engaging and visually stimulating. By paying attention to the details and tapping into our creativity, Black Swan pulls the viewer through the mental process of buying a car in a unique and exciting way while still educating the consumer. Faced with creating an innovative campaign for iMeet, Black Swan’s GMUNK draws upon nostalgia to visually mimic the feeling of e-conference overload. By taking a queue off the old 8-Bit MISSILE COMMAND game, email subjects turn into missiles – napalming our audience as they overload the inbox. Though visually simple, the technical details are what make the spot original and unexpected. Email tags, icons, text and the broken interlaced flare of the Game Over screen are all perfected to suite a true recreation of an old favorite. Additionally, we use purposeful pacing and shot selection to build tension as the emails overload and the world explodes.
